Package Unit Installation & Replacement

Package Unit Installation
& Replacement.

All-in-one heating and cooling for homes, rooftops, tight spaces, and light commercial buildings across Orange County. The whole system in one outdoor cabinet, so your closets can stay closets.

Why it matters

The whole system,
in one outdoor cabinet.

A package unit is an all-in-one HVAC system where the major heating and cooling components live in one outdoor cabinet, usually on the roof or a ground pad. The ductwork connects straight to it, so there's no separate indoor furnace or air handler eating up attic, closet, or garage space.

That makes it a practical option when indoor space is tight, the home already has a rooftop unit, or the ductwork is already designed for a package system. It's also common on flat roofs and light commercial buildings where outdoor service access just makes more sense.

The catch

A new unit is only as
good as the install.

Many older package units get swapped out without checking the full system. The old unit may be leaking refrigerant, short cycling, rusted, oversized, undersized, poorly connected to the ductwork, or sitting on a roof curb that needs attention. Drop a new unit on top of those problems and they come right along with it.

Bad duct connections, wrong sizing, poor drainage, a roof leak, weak airflow, undersized electrical, or a damaged curb can all hurt comfort, efficiency, noise, and how long the system lasts. The cabinet is only part of the story. The install around it decides the performance.

How VORXS helps

We check the whole
setup first.

Before recommending anything, VORXS checks the existing unit, the ductwork connection, the roof curb or pad, the electrical and disconnect, the gas line if applicable, the thermostat wiring, condensate drainage, airflow, and equipment access. Then we recommend the package unit setup that actually makes sense for the property.

Sometimes the old roof curb fits, sometimes it needs a curb adapter or extra sheet metal work. Either way, you'll know up front. A properly selected and installed package unit can improve comfort, free up indoor space, and run more reliably, and if the real issue is your ductwork, we'll tell you straight.

Your options

The package units
we install.

Three main types, matched to your gas availability, electrical setup, and comfort goals.

Most common in OC

Gas/Electric

Electric air conditioning paired with gas heating. A common setup for many existing rooftop units in Orange County.

Often the simplest swap when a home runs on gas.

Heat Pump

Handles both heating and cooling with electricity. Cools like an AC, then reverses to heat. Learn about heat pumps.

A strong all-electric option in mild OC weather.

Dual-Fuel

Pairs a heat pump with gas heat. The heat pump runs in milder weather, and gas takes over when stronger heat is needed.

Heat-pump efficiency with gas heat as backup.

Not sure which way to go? Gas/electric fits when the property already has gas, a heat pump fits when you want all-electric, and dual-fuel is the middle ground. Weighing a package unit against other systems? Start with our heating and cooling replacement options.

Common Package Unit Myths.

Myth

Package Units Are Only for Commercial Buildings

Truth: They're common on light commercial buildings, but they also work well on homes, especially where indoor space is limited or the property already has a rooftop unit.

Myth

A Bigger Package Unit Will Cool Better

Truth: Bigger isn't always better. An oversized unit can short cycle, cool unevenly, and remove less humidity. Proper sizing and airflow matter.

Myth

Heat Pump Package Units Don't Work

Truth: Modern heat pumps can be a very good option in mild climates like Orange County. The key is the right equipment and a correct install.

Myth

Gas Heat Is Always Better

Truth: Gas heat can be great when the property is set up for it, but it isn't automatically best for every home. Heat pump and dual-fuel may fit better depending on goals.

Myth

Any Package Unit Fits the Old Roof Curb

Truth: Not always. The curb, duct openings, gas line, electrical, and roof condition all need checking. Sometimes a curb adapter or sheet metal work is needed.

Myth

A New Unit Fixes All Comfort Problems

Truth: The equipment is only one part. Poor ductwork, bad airflow, insulation, thermostat location, and old registers can still affect comfort.

FAQs

Package unit questions.

Quick answers homeowners ask us every day. More questions? Call (657) 274-8597.

Are package units good for Orange County homes?
Yes, they can be a good option when the home already has a rooftop unit, limited indoor space, or ductwork designed for a package system. The best choice depends on the existing setup and comfort goals.
Is a heat pump package unit good in Orange County?
In many cases, yes. Orange County has mild winters, which can make heat pump package units a strong option for heating and cooling. The property still needs to be checked for electrical, ductwork, sizing, and installation requirements.
Should I choose gas or heat pump?
It depends. Gas/electric may make sense if your property already has gas and the existing unit is gas heat. A heat pump may make sense if you want an all-electric system and your property is a good fit. Dual-fuel may be a good middle option when you want both.
Can VORXS replace my old rooftop package unit?
Yes. VORXS can inspect the existing unit, roof curb, duct connections, electrical, gas line if applicable, and drainage to recommend the right replacement option.
Do package units need maintenance?
Yes. Package units should be maintained regularly. Coils, filters, electrical components, blower sections, drains, heat exchangers, gas components, and overall operation should be checked to help keep the system working properly.
